Grief Counselling

WHEN TO PURSUE GRIEF COUNSELLING

Navigating through loss and trying to make sense of the pain and circumstances surrounding it can be a difficult and overwhelming process.

While none of us is immune to facing grief, we all process it differently and in our own time frame. Grief can be particularly challenging for children and adolescents to manage, with support playing a critical role in their continued emotional development and wellbeing.

Counselling for grief and loss can assist you in understanding your needs during this time and give you a safe, supportive space in which to express your grief. It will also help you to identify healthy ways of coping and adjusting to life following loss.

Grief can manifest differently from person to person. While some individuals may not need or want to see a psychologist for grief counselling, it is recommended to pursue help if your grief is making day-to-day life a challenge. This may look like:

- Overwhelming sadness or sorrow

- Feeling constantly teary or on the brink of tears

- Sudden bursts of anger

- Extreme lethargy or tiredness

- Inability to eat or severely reduced appetite

- Trouble focusing

- Difficulties sleeping

- Fearfulness, anxiety and/or panic

- Hearing or seeing things related to the loss and more.

Confronting grief and taking steps to work through it can be distressing and challenging. However, it is possible to find a path through grief and loss with the support and guidance of an experienced psychologist.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Exactly how many grief counselling sessions you may need following a loss will be unique to you. Grief can be complex with no set timeline for recovery or return to ‘normal’ life, while things may begin to improve around the 6-session mark, more sessions may also be beneficial.

Your psychologist will work with you on what this timeframe might look like, reevaluating as you progress and recommending a preferred plan based on your individual needs.

  • We use a variety of tools including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Traumatic Grief Therapy among others.

The approach we take will be determined based on your needs and preferences and what we feel will be most effective for your grief experience and recovery.
