Postnatal Depression

Did you know that around one in seven Australian mothers will experience Post Natal Depression (PND)? Occurring anywhere from days to months after birth, PND can involve feelings of sadness, hopelessness, incompetence, numbness, anxiety and guilt.

Other signs include:

  • Poor concentration
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of appetite;
  • Tearfulness
  • Irritability
  • Low sex drive.

While a clear cause of PND hasn’t been established, possible contributing factors could include the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy and childbirth, and the emotional challenge of adjusting to motherhood.

If you are suffering from PND, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible – not just for the sake of your own quality of life, but to avoid the negative impact if can have on relationships with your partner and new baby.
